Corporate

We have staff supporting the armed forces all around the world. An operation this big needs a lot of support itself, which is where our head office teams come in. They consist of all kinds of Finance, HR, IT, Audit, Commercial and Marketing professionals. And, based in Darlington and Germany, they help our business run with military precision.

Q&A

Just like every other part of our organisation, our head offices aren’t exactly what you’d call ‘normal’. If you want to find out just how different they are, the best people to listen to are our staff. They know exactly what it’s like to work at the heart of an ever-changing, worldwide operation. And they’re happy to share their stories with you.

It’s a laugh. There’s a really friendly atmosphere.

What’s the social life like?

I’d say it’s pretty good.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining NAAFI?

Do it. It’s a great organisation, and you won’t regret your decision.

What do you think are the important things you need to remember when working for NAAFI?

Who your customers are, and what they do.

A Day in the Life

Senior HR Business Partner – Overseas

In HR Overseas there is the constant buzz of phone conversations, whether it be reference checks, communication with payroll, EFI recruitment, disciplinary and grievance advice, end of tour paperwork or sickness. While most mornings involve picking up emails, voicemails and opening post to see what lies in store for us, the queries are never in short supply, with advice needed in operational theatres, solving problems with people on ships, pay queries or distance learning tests that need to be marked. Due to the time difference, making sure you call people back at the right times can be a challenge in itself!

Senior HR Business Partner – Germany

One day you can be managing recruitment and the next you can be working on a new policy to sit inline with a new piece of legislation that is being introduced. Managing people issues to ensure employees are treated in accordance with employment law is imperative and then, of course, there is assisting the business and ensuring that we are able to meet the company and garrison objectives. This might require spending time with the Garrison Business Managers to build your relationship or advising line managers so that we can be a proactive source of advice for areas such as recruitment, succession planning and training & development.

HR Manager – Corporate

Since moving to Darlington, we have been settling ourselves in on the stage (some would say this is the right place for us!) and getting to know our new work colleagues. Recruitment remains our biggest challenge, so the team have been working closely with managers to provide support and establish clear processes for our recruitment policy. In addition to this, we are also reviewing a number of recruitment agencies to ensure we are getting the best service possible – something which has proved to be a real eye-opener following the high level of interest we have received!

Accounts Payable Manager

Arrived bright and early, which is no mean feat for a Monday. There’s just time to get some things in order before our weekly catch-up meeting. We meet to discuss what everybody’s got planned. It quickly becomes apparent that this is going to be a VERY busy week.

My immediate priority is balance sheet reconciliations, but the biggest challenge I’ll face this week will be the recs for Afghanistan. I’ll also be putting together the GRNI for our overseas services and having a lot of meetings about our new expenses system. And, perhaps most importantly, there’s a meeting for the Social Committee. We’ve still got summer events to plan, and we’ve even got to start making arrangements for Christmas!

There’s a lot going on and I’ll have to do it while fielding all kinds of calls from all around the world. But there’s a really good team spirit here, so I never feel like I’m going to be swamped.

I get stuck in and the day flies by. Monday’s over before I know it, and I head off home happy that I’ve made a dent in most of my projects. Will I get to focus on them tomorrow, or will something new pop up and get in the way? You just never know.
